Golf Simulator for Beginners: What to Expect Your First Time
A beginner-friendly guide to indoor golf simulators in Aurora: what to bring, how booking works, what the screen shows, and when to start with a lesson.
Jun 8, 2026 · Club X Indoor Golf
Your first golf simulator visit does not need to be complicated. You do not need a full bag, a perfect swing, golf clothes, or a group of experienced players. You need a booked bay, comfortable shoes, and enough curiosity to make a few swings.
Beginners often worry that indoor golf is only for serious golfers. It is not. A simulator bay is actually one of the better places to start because the environment is controlled. No weather, no range line, no one waiting behind you. Just a bay, a screen, and feedback after every shot.
Here is what to expect at Club X Indoor Golf in Aurora.
What a simulator bay is
A golf simulator bay is an indoor hitting space with a mat, screen, launch monitor, and software. You hit a real golf ball into the screen. The system reads the shot and shows where the ball would have gone.
At Club X, Bay 1 uses TrackMan 4. Bays 2 and 3 use GSPro. The difference matters more as you improve. For a beginner, the main job is simple: hit, watch the result, learn what changed.
If you want the full bay comparison, read the simulator rental page.
What to bring
Bring yourself first.
Optional items:
- Your own clubs, if you have them.
- A golf glove, if you use one.
- Golf balls, if you prefer your own.
- Athletic shoes or soft-spike golf shoes.
- A water bottle.
Free club rentals are available, so not owning clubs should not stop you from booking. Avoid metal spikes. Wear clothes you can swing in. Jeans are fine if you can move. Athletic clothes are fine. You do not need to dress like a tour player.
The first-time visitor guide covers the full arrival flow.
How booking works
Public bookings are made online through Alba Play. Pick a bay, time, and party size. You get a confirmation email with entry instructions and access details.
Public play is open from 6 AM to midnight. Members get 24/7 access. If it is your first visit, give yourself a little extra time to park, find the second-floor unit, and get comfortable in the bay.
Start at Book a Bay if you are ready.
Which bay should beginners choose?
Most beginners should choose based on comfort, group size, and handedness.
Bay 1 is the biggest and runs TrackMan. It is the best choice if you want a lesson, want more space, have a larger group, or want the most detailed data.
Bay 2 runs GSPro and works for left- and right-handed golfers. It is a strong general choice.
Bay 3 runs GSPro and is the value bay, but it is right-handed only. If anyone in your group is left-handed, choose Bay 1 or Bay 2.
If you are nervous, book a shorter session first. Sixty minutes is enough for a first taste.
What the screen will show
The screen can show a driving range, practice mode, or a golf course. You can hit balls just to see distance and direction, or you can play holes on a course.
Do not worry about every number. Beginners should focus on:
- Did I make contact?
- Did the ball start left, right, or straight?
- Did it curve?
- Did the carry distance change?
- Did one setup feel easier than another?
If you want more data, TrackMan can show much more. But your first visit should not become a math test.
When to start with a lesson instead
Book a bay if your goal is to try indoor golf.
Start with a lesson or $79 Swing Check if:
- You are nervous and want guidance.
- You have never swung a club.
- You slice every shot.
- You want someone to set up the simulator.
- You want one clear thing to practice.
A coach can make the first hour easier because they remove decisions. They can tell you which club to start with, what setup to use, and which number matters.
Beginner FAQ
Will people watch me?
No one is there to judge your swing. The bay is your space for the booking.
Can I come alone?
Yes. Solo practice is common. Coming alone is often the easiest way to learn.
Can I bring a friend who does not golf?
Yes. A simulator bay is a good low-pressure group activity. Keep the format casual.
Do I need to know how to keep score?
No. You can use practice mode, play a few holes, or just hit shots.
